How it all started

TextileArtist was born in 2013 when brothers Joe and Sam Pitcher witnessed something remarkable: their mum, Sue Stone, rediscovering her passion for textile art in her 50s.

As a child, Sue had learned to sew from her own mum and loved to make clothes for her dolls. But life, as it often does, got in the way. Running a business and raising a family meant Sue’s creative pursuits took a back seat for decades.

When Sue picked up her needle again, her creativity blossomed, her confidence soared, and a whole new world opened up to her. Joe and Sam were captivated by this transformation and wondered: how many other people out there are yearning to unlock their creative potential through textile art?

That spark of curiosity led to the creation of TextileArtist.org, a place where passionate stitchers from all walks of life could find inspiration, learn new techniques, and connect with like-minded souls. It started small – just a few informal chats with Sue’s artist friends – but it quickly grew into a vibrant community.

In 2020, as the world grappled with the challenges of a global pandemic, Joe and Sam saw an opportunity to bring stitchers together in a new way.

They launched the Community Stitch Challenge, offering free online workshops to help people stay creative and connected during isolation. The response was overwhelming, and it became clear that there was a hunger for more in-depth, ongoing textile art education and community support.

And so, Stitch Club was born – a place where passionate stitchers could learn, grow, and connect, no matter where they were in the world.

“With each new workshop my confidence grows – I finally feel I can call myself a textile artist.”
